How is your timing belt? Do you even have one? What does it do? Why should you care?
All good questions, let me try to explain. A timing belt is a vital part of the engine on many cars. It is a toothed belt that connects between the engine crankshaft and camshaft and keeps them in time with each other. Some cars use a chain similar to a bicycle chain for the same purpose, so your car may not have one, ask us we can tell you. If the timing belt, or chain were to fail serious engine damage can result.
Timing belts have a service life of as little as 60,000 miles on some cars but more usually 90,000 or 105,000 miles. There is also a time recommended service life regardless of miles, usually 8 to 10 years.
It is very important to the health of your car to follow the manufacturer's recommendations or the engine could be damaged irreparably in some cases. If you don't know when it was last replaced, or you are approaching the 90-100,000 mile range on your car, give us a call.
If we determine your car needs it and you mention this post we will give you 10% off.
It is often not a simple procedure on most cars, in fact sometimes it is very extensive due to the complexity of some engines. In most cases the engine's water pump is also driven by the timing belt so it is prudent to replace it at the same time. There are also timing belt guides and tensioners and serpentine belts and engine seals that may require replacement at the same time. Call for an estimate.
